violin by Bernhard Enzensperger 1826
Bernhard Laurenz Enzensperger was born in 1788 in Füssen/Germany. He moved to Vienna to apprentice with Georg Thir. In 1812 he opened his own workshop. Enzensperger did a lot of research into acoustics and obtained a patent in 1831 for a so-called 'acoustic guitar'. From then on he mainly made guitars and was considered one of the leading guitar makers in Vienna. You hardly come across his violins. The purfling is special about this violin. It seems to be 'inlaid' in a very special way, Enzensperger probably used the methods and skills he learned in guitar making here. The violin has a beautifully grained spruce top with stylish, graceful F-holes and various signs of wear that show beautiful patina. The back has a fine, mild flame and the scroll is neatly cut. The violin has a mature, mild and balanced sound.
