Master violin Johannes Smits 1916
Master violin Johannes Smits 1916
Beautiful violin built by Johannes Bartholomeus Smits in Zurich in 1916. Johannes Smits was a very versatile artist. He not only built violins, but was also an (interior) designer, draftsman and lithographer. Johannes Smits was born in Haarlem and left for Zurich in Switzerland in 1916, where he was a teacher and later director of the local arts and crafts school. He built this violin (opus no. 6) in Zurich. His great versatility as an artist can be seen in this violin. Built according to the classical methods and with great craftsmanship, this violin also has its own individualistic style. The shape of the blades is graceful with the 'hips' visually widening out. The F-holes are more Guarnerius style. The scroll that has been carefully cut looks powerful, but also elegant. A special violin with a powerful, balanced, mature sound (sound clip below)..
