Dr. G.J. van Leeuwen 1912
Dutch master violin built in 1912 in The Hague. Dr. GJ van Leeuwen made a name for himself as a violin maker at the beginning of the last century and his instruments were very popular. At the exhibition in Brussels he received a gold medal and several honorary diplomas. This violin built in The Hague shows his craftsmanship. The violin is built after the model of the Cremonese masters with its own personal style. The sharp inlay is beautiful, characterful scroll and elegant curve of the blades. The regular flaming in the mirrored maple back is beautifully expressed in the soft brown gold-yellow oil lacquer. The violin has a clear, powerful, carrying sound (sound clip below).
Doctor, honorary doctor of philosophy and violin maker. Also experimented with his own style. Won a silver medal for tone in Brussels in 1910. (source: Brompton's book of Violin and Bowmakers).
