Old german violin
Old german violin
Although most violins are made after the model of Stradivarius, the instruments modeled after Amati, Stradivarius' great teacher, remain very popular. This successful German replica catches the eye with its characteristic, warm gold-brown lacquer, an indication that the violin was built in Markneukirchen, around or before 1900. The Amati style can be seen, among other things, in the relatively narrow, vertically positioned F- holes and the high curvature of the front and back blades. The scroll, slightly asymmetrical and full of character, shows that the instrument was made by an experienced builder. The beautiful transparent golden-brown lacquer shows a worn spot at the top right of the fingerboard, a sign that the violin has been played by a good violinist in the high positions. The violin, which is in perfect condition, has the sound characteristics that Amati violins are known for; mild, warm, balanced and somewhat dark in the low strings (sound clip below).
